Oh hi, I’m Susan!

and It’s my honor to help you love your coily hair.

I grew up during a time when very coily or kinky hair didn’t conform to society’s version of beauty. To have “bad hair” meant getting a bad hand of the genetic luck-of-the-draw. The hot comb was the solution to iron out those kinks and thus feel more lovely and accepted.

The most “natural” thing to me was this: the six-week cycle of feeling the kinks against my scalp, making the appointment for the salon, and then spending most of a Saturday waiting my turn to have chemicals applied to make the kinks go away.

I used a relaxer on my hair for so long, after a while I had no recollection of what my real hair was really like. In March 2014, my curiosity got the better of me, and once I felt that bumpy texture on my scalp, I didn’t call the salon.

So hence my natural hair journey began.

Since then, my natural hair journey has changed how I feel about myself and how I present myself to the world. I have learned that natural hair is not self-defining, but the authenticity it brings has such a positive effect on life in general. I didn’t know my hair could be beautiful, and more importantly, that I could learn to love it.

My natural hair journey has been filled with ups and downs, and I have dispelled myths and preconceived notions about what it takes to manage it and make it healthy. If you are curious about starting your own natural hair journey, I hope you find some tips, tricks, and inspiration about redefining your relationship with your hair.
